Some phone calls change our lives forever. I received on of these the Friday after Thanksgiving a few years ago. My friend Joann called me and told me she and her brother were going to McDonald’s to pick up their checks. They were teenagers that had become my friends through church and Avon. Having a daycare with 10 children Joann knew that I could not leave if I needed milk or something. Telling her I did not need anything we continued to talk for a few minutes.
She said guess what? I replied that I did not know. She laughed and told me that she had given Joella her 5 year old niece all of her Christmas presents the night before. She told me that she had been so excited playing with all of her gifts. I told her of course she was happy. Telling her she would now have to go out and buy all new gifts. She stated that was okay. Little did I know it was God’s plan for her to receive the gifts early.
About 30 to 40 minutes later I received a phone call from the police wanting to know if I could go to her parents house. Telling them my mother was visiting that she could stay with the daycare children while I went to their house a few doors down. Asking the policeman why I needed to go. He stated their had been a wreck and the parents needed someone there when they received the news. I had a very bad feeling about the call.
Going to my friend’s house I was praying for God to help me know what to do and say. About, five minutes after arriving to their house the policeman came to the door. He asked if he could come in and if they would please have a seat. The next words were so horrifying. He said that their daughter Joann, son Ben, and grand daughter were killed in an auto accident. Needless to say pandemonium broke out.
Three young lives ended so suddenly Joann 19, Benjamin 18, and Joella age 5. The next few days were devastating for the parents and close friends. Much can be said for being ready to meet our Savior at a moment’s notice. Joann and I had discussed that very issue at her uncle’s funeral the week before. Little would I have dreamed: I would be at a triple funeral a week later with her being one of the victims. Truly since my husband was the pastor for the young people we shared in many sad days. We also had many amazing events that surrounded the accident and days ahead. Too many to share in this article.
